To measure the temperature in your cooling bag reliably, always use a liquid thermometer with the sensor in a liquid, not an ordinary air thermometer.

This is essential because of the thermal density of your medication. Medication consists of a liquid, and by placing the sensor in a liquid you simulate exactly the temperature of the contents of your syringe, pen or vial.

A measurement in the air is not reliable. Air cools down very quickly, but also warms up again immediately when you open the bag. An air thermometer therefore shows large fluctuations that say nothing about the actual temperature of your medication. So always make sure your sensor is in a liquid if you want to check the cooling accurately.

1. Put the gel packs in the freezer at -18°C for at least 12 or 14 hours, so simply in your freezer at home. (12 or 14 hours depending on which model you have)

2. Slide the gel packs back into the designated compartments.

3. Place your medication in the middle compartment and close the bag.

Handy tip: keep your gel packs in the freezer as standard. Then they are always ready to go.

If you are not sure of your freezer temperature, or it is set colder than -18°C, let your gel packs acclimatise for 30 minutes before adding them to the cooling bag.

No, your medication cannot freeze. Our gel packs use a specially developed phase change material (PCM) that continuously releases 3 °C. Because the gel packs do not cool to 0 °C, the temperature in the bag physically cannot drop below freezing point.

In addition, the gel packs sit in separate compartments, so they do not come into direct contact with your medication. As long as you place the gel packs in the designated compartments, the temperature stays perfectly balanced.

Never add an extra gel pack to the bag, as this disturbs the specially calculated balance and performance.

Yes. But the warmer it is, the shorter the time the bag holds the temperature. At around 32°C, expect roughly 30 per cent less time than the stated duration.

Going to a hot destination? Then choose a model with a longer cooling time.

Yes, hundreds of times. They do not wear out and you do not need to refill anything. Do not drop a frozen gel pack, though, because when frozen they are hard and a corner can crack. Individual gel packs are available separately if you want a second set to swap on the go.

No, that is counterproductive. The bags are designed around an exact amount of cold in an exact place. An extra gel pack disturbs that balance and actually increases the risk of your medication getting too cold.

Because air warms up much faster than liquid. If you measure the air in a bag, the performance seems better or worse than it really is for your medication. What counts is the temperature of the liquid in your pen.

That is why we measure there, and why our stated hours are more conservative and more reliable than figures based on air measurements.

Here's how to get through security quickly and easily:

Gel packs in hand luggage: Gel packs are allowed in your hand luggage as long as they are completely frozen (they are then considered a solid).

On the return journey: Have the gel packs thawed (become liquid)? Refreeze them before the return flight, or simply put them in your checked luggage.

Medication: To be on the safe side, carry a medication passport (free from your pharmacy) or a doctor's statement. If you are asked for it, just show it briefly and you can carry straight on.
